Spicy Sweet Potato Hash Browns (Ratalyacha Kees)

Sweet potato is a root vegetable which is high in fiber and is a good source of vitamin A, B and manganese. It is a starchy ,bland tasting vegetable which looks unattractive but makes a healthy snack in this recipe ,where it is mixed with peanuts. 

Sweet Potato Hash Brown

Sweet potato is called Ratale in marathi and is  widely used at the time of fasting in India . Here, I often get confused and get the wrong variety which is very sweet as compared to the Indian one which is bland and maroon in color. To correctly identify the right variety of sweet potato, make a small incision and look at the fleshy part. If you see softer orange fleshy variety, then discard it. It should look like creamy white as shown in the picture. 

 The potato is grated, mixed with peanuts and seasoned with fresh lime juice to give a crunchy snack which tastes semi sweet and tangy at the same time. 


  • Sweet Potato --2 ( peel the skin and grate )
  • Roasted peanut powder coarse --2 Tablespoon
  • Jeera--1 teaspoon
  • Green chillies--2-3 (cut into pieces)
  • Curry leaves
  • Ginger 1 small piece


Take a wide pan and heat oil in it. When oil is hot, add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds.

Add chopped green chillies and stir for 1 min.

Add grated sweet potatoes, crushed ginger and stir for about 2 minutes on a medium flame. 

Leave the mixture as it is. Bottom part of sweet potatoes will start turning golden brown like hash browns. 

Add roasted, crushed peanuts and salt at this point of time . Dont stir it too often and allow it to roast lightly brown on low flame.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with wedge of lime.
